Oral Hygiene Tips for Kids
As a parent, one of the best investments you can make in your child's health is teaching them proper oral hygiene early. Cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease in India - and they're entirely preventable.
When Should Dental Care Begin?
Even before the first tooth appears, you should wipe your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. Once the first tooth erupts (around 6 months), start brushing with a grain-of-rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
Age-by-Age Guide
Ages 0–2 - Wipe gums after feeding - Start a soft toothbrush at the first tooth - First dental visit by age 1
Ages 3–6 - Pea-sized toothpaste - Brush for 2 minutes, twice daily - Begin flossing when teeth touch
Ages 7+ - Supervised brushing until age 10–12 - Introduce electric toothbrushes - Regular fluoride treatments and sealants
Making Dental Care Fun
- Let children choose their toothbrush (favourite colour/character)
- Use a 2-minute song or timer app
- Praise and reward positive dental habits
- Never use the dentist as a threat
- Bring children along for your check-ups so they normalise it
